What Chemical Peels Treat

A chemical peel applies a controlled acid solution that lifts damaged outer layers of skin so fresher tissue can replace them. That single mechanism addresses a surprising range of skin concerns.

Pigmentation is one of the main concerns chemical peels can address. They can improve sun damage, hyperpigmentation, melasma, freckles, and the general discoloration that builds up over years of sun exposure. They can also improve skin texture, including fine lines, wrinkles, other signs of aging, and enlarged pores. Acne is another common concern, from active breakouts to the acne scars they leave behind. Uneven skin tone often improves as these concerns are addressed.

Chemical peels can also help with skin concerns such as congested, oily skin that tends to break out during a Florida summer. However, a chemical peel will not tighten loose skin or replace lost volume, and we will tell you that during your consultation.

How Peel Depth Works - From Glycolic Acid to Phenol Peels

Chemical peels are grouped by how far into the skin they reach, and that depth drives everything else.

Superficial peels are usually built on glycolic acid or salicylic acid and work on the surface only. A glycolic acid peel brightens a dull complexion, eases mild discoloration, and needs almost no recovery, which is why light peels work well as a repeated series. Redness fades within a day.

Medium peels reach the epidermis and the upper dermis. Trichloroacetic acid, or TCA, is the classic medium-depth agent, and medium depth is where stubborn pigment problems, moderate wrinkles, and other signs of aging start to move. TCA is the acid most practitioners reach for at this depth. At low concentration, a TCA peel behaves much like a superficial peel, while stronger trichloroacetic acid reaches medium depth properly, so the same acid can mean two very different weeks of recovery. Medium peels are where real flaking begins.

Deeper peels use higher-strength TCA or phenol. Phenol peels sit at the deep end of that scale. Because phenol penetrates to the reticular dermis, phenol peels are carried out in a medical setting with close monitoring, and they are done once rather than repeated. Phenol peels are not part of the treatment menu here, and for the skin concerns we see most, that intensity is rarely what the situation calls for. Almost everything we perform sits in the superficial to medium range, because deeper work carries more risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation on the skin types we treat across Tampa Bay.

How Tampa’s Climate Shapes Your Chemical Peel Plan

Tampa’s year-round sun and warm climate make careful treatment planning especially important when it comes to chemical peels. Because newly resurfaced skin is more sensitive to sun exposure, the type and strength of your peel should take into account your skin concerns, skin tone, lifestyle, and the time of year.

This is particularly important for concerns such as melasma and hyperpigmentation, which can be aggravated by sun and heat. For some patients, a series of lighter peels may be more appropriate than a single aggressive treatment, while stronger resurfacing may be better timed for months when sun exposure is easier to manage.

At Fusion Medispa, we customize each chemical peel rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. We also consider the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly in deeper skin tones, and build proper sun protection and aftercare into the treatment plan from the beginning.

Who Performs Your Chemical Peel Treatment

Your chemical peel treatment at Fusion Medispa is performed by licensed aestheticians with more than 20 years of experience. Medical Director Dr. Jorge Leal oversees clinical practice. Every plan is guided by a Physician Assistant and an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, and every clinician here is licensed by the State of Florida.

Depth is a judgment call. The same product used on two patients with different skin types can produce two different outcomes, so every treatment starts with a free consultation.

Recovery Time and Aftercare

Recovery time tracks depth. A superficial peel leaves mild redness for a day and no real downtime. A medium peel brings three to seven days of flaking and tightness, and skin can look slightly swollen through the first 48 hours. Redness settles as the new surface appears.

Keep makeup off until we clear you, pause the acids in your home routine, and stay out of direct sun. Cool compresses or ice packs settle heat, irritation, and swollen skin, while a bland moisturizer handles the dryness. Do not pull at loose flakes, because that is what turns an ordinary chemical peel into a lasting mark. We match ZO Skin Health, Obagi, HydroPeptide, or ClearChoice products to the skin we have just treated.

Most patients notice the first glow within a week, and skin feels smooth again once flaking ends. A single treatment helps, but visible results across pigmentation, skin tone, and texture build over four to six sessions, and those visible results hold for a few months with maintenance.

How Peels Pair With Other Treatments

Peels pair with other treatments rather than competing with them. Microneedling rebuilds collagen from below while a chemical peel resurfaces from above, NueraTight skin tightening addresses laxity that no peel can reach, and Botox in Tampa can soften expression lines that acids cannot touch. The neck, chest, and body show sun damage as readily as the face, and the neck is the area most people forget, so ask at your consultation which areas we can treat.

Before & After

Chemical Peel Questions Tampa Clients Ask

When is the best time of year for a chemical peel in Tampa?

Any month works for a superficial peel. For medium-depth resurfacing, we prefer November through March, when the UV index eases, and sun exposure is easier to control while new skin settles.

Will a chemical peel fix melasma that returns every Tampa summer?

A chemical peel can help lighten melasma, but it does not permanently cure it. Because melasma can be triggered by sun exposure and heat, ongoing maintenance may be needed to help keep pigmentation under control. Depending on your skin and the severity of the discoloration, your provider may recommend a series of treatments along with consistent daily sun protection.

Do you offer phenol peels?

No. Phenol peels are deep, single-use resurfacing carried out under close medical supervision. Our menu runs from light peels through medium-depth options, the safer range for most skin conditions and skin types.

Are chemical peels safe for darker skin tones?

Yes, with the right selection. Deeper peels carry a higher risk of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation on richer complexions, so we start conservatively and build.

How soon can I wear makeup after a chemical peel?

Wait 24 hours after a superficial peel, and until flaking has finished after a medium peel. Makeup over peeling skin traps irritation and drags flakes loose early.
