Why Breakouts and Dark Marks Last Longer on the Gulf Coast

Tampa mornings start close to saturated. Long-term NOAA normals put relative humidity near 88% at 7 a.m. and about 57% by mid-afternoon, so sweat evaporates slowly and stays on the skin with oil and sunscreen. Hot days are common, too. The city averages 94 days a year at 90°F or higher, and on July 27, 2025, it reached 100°F for the first time on record.

Friction makes it worse. Breakouts tend to gather where fabric and gear hold that layer against the skin, such as the hairline under a cap, the jaw under a helmet strap, and the chest and back under a damp shirt.

Sun keeps acne visible after a pimple heals. Tampa's July UV index has averaged about 12 over nearly three decades of readings, and UV darkens the flat brown marks a breakout leaves behind. Those marks usually fade once the acne is under control and the skin is protected, which is why broad-spectrum sunscreen, reapplied after sweating, is part of the aftercare we recommend.

Active Acne or Acne Scars? Sorting Out What You Have

Breakouts and scars call for different tools, and treating them in the wrong order wastes sessions. Your consultation looks at what is breaking out now and what earlier breakouts left behind.

  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Flat brown marks left after a breakout. They are not true scars, and daily UV keeps them dark.
  • Post-inflammatory erythema. Flat pink or red marks that linger after inflamed pimples and show more on lighter skin.
  • Rolling scars. Broad dips with soft edges that make skin look uneven in side light.
  • Boxcar scars. Wider depressions with sharp, defined edges.
  • Ice pick scars. Narrow, deep pits and the hardest type for any in-office treatment to improve.

Deep, painful cysts and nodules are a separate case. They usually need prescription medication from a dermatologist, and in-office peels and facials support that care rather than replace it. Microneedling for scars starts once breakouts are under control, because we do not perform it over active acne or infection, and recent isotretinoin use requires a waiting period first.

Acne Treatments for Active Breakouts

The ClearChoice® Acne Peel exfoliates congested surface cells, helps control excess oil and minimizes the look of pores. We recommend a series of six so results build from one peel to the next.

The Deep Pore Facial clears blackheads and clogged pores with deep extractions and the Lumi™ Enzyme, a good match for the oil and sunscreen buildup of a humid summer. The Geneo oxygen facial is a gentler option formulated for acne-prone and sensitive skin. For breakouts on the buttocks, we offer the Booty Facial.

Home care helps a clear stretch last longer. Our aestheticians match ClearChoice, ZO Skin Health, Obagi or HydroPeptide products to the skin they have just treated. For flare-ups between visits, our acne and blemish collection includes the sulfur-based ZO Complexion Clearing Masque and HydroPeptide Spot Correction Treatment.

Acne Scar Treatment Matched to Scar Depth

For acne scars, treatment works in layers. Flat marks respond to medical-grade chemical peels and exfoliation at the surface, while dips in the skin need new collagen built underneath, which is the goal of medical microneedling.

Because microneedling does not target melanin the way aggressive laser resurfacing can, it is a safer option for acne scar treatment across the wide range of skin tones in Tampa Bay. Collagen continues to remodel for weeks after each session, so texture can keep improving between appointments. The narrowest ice pick scars change least, and your consultation sets out what a series can realistically do for them.

Our full treatment menu also includes NueraTight skin tightening, Botox injections and laser hair removal.

Acne Treatment - Tampa, FL FAQ

Is Fusion Medispa located in Tampa?

Not inside city limits. Our office is at 8731 Gunn Hwy in Odessa, in Hillsborough County. Drives range from about 10 minutes or less from Citrus Park to 30 minutes or more from Downtown Tampa at rush hour.

Should I wait for cooler months to start treatment for acne scars in Tampa?

Not for every treatment. Microneedling can continue through summer as long as treated skin stays out of direct sun for the first week. Medium-depth peels fit best from November through March, when UV eases and new skin is easier to protect. Your consultation sets the order, so summer weeks still count toward the plan.

Can I keep training outdoors in the Tampa heat during treatment?

Yes, with a short pause. Skip the gym, sauna and beach for about 48 hours after microneedling, because sweat and chlorine irritate the microchannels while they close. Between sessions, cleanse soon after a sweaty workout or a day on the water, and reapply sunscreen after sweating so post-acne marks do not darken.

Who should hold off on microneedling for acne scars?

We postpone microneedling during active breakouts, skin infections, recent sunburn or an eczema or psoriasis flare, and after recent isotretinoin use. Tell us at your consultation if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history of keloid scars or cold sores, or take blood thinners, because each one can change or delay the plan.

How many sessions does acne scar treatment take?

It depends on scar type and depth. Microneedling is usually planned as three sessions, four to six weeks apart, and your consultation covers the number of sessions before you book. Our treatment packages bundle microneedling and facial series.

Start with a free consultation. Bring a list of what you have already tried, and we will build one plan for the breakouts and the marks they left. New patients receive 10% off their first visit, and regular clients can use our monthly memberships.
